What is Aqua Yoga?
Yoga in Water: At its core, Aqua Yoga is simply performing yoga poses (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama),and sometimes meditation, while partially or fully immersed in water.
Utilizing Water’s Properties:The water becomes an integral part of the practice.
Buoyancy: The water supports a significant portion of your body weight (up to 70% in chest-deep water),reducing impact on joints like knees, hips, and ankles. This makes it ideal for individuals with joint pain, arthritis, injuries, or those recovering from surgery.
Resistance: Moving through water provides natural, gentle resistance in all directions. This helps to strengthen muscles without the need for heavy weights, building tone and endurance.
Hydrostatic Pressure: The pressure of the water on your body can help improve circulation, reduce swelling, and encourage deeper breathing.
Modified Poses: While many traditional yoga poses are adapted for the water, some may be performed differently, and new poses unique to the aquatic environment might be introduced. For example, standing poses might feel more stable, while supine poses could involve floating. The pool wall might be used for support or resistance.
Holistic Practice: Like land yoga, Aqua Yoga aims to bring mind-body connection, stress relief, and overall well-being. It often includes breathwork and relaxation techniques.
