What is Kundalini Yoga?

Despite being performed worldwide, Kundalini yoga has an unidentified origin. It has been known for centuries that Kundalini energy exists, and it is mentioned in ancient Vedic literature from 1,000 B.C.

The Sanskrit word “Kundal,” which means “Circular,” is where the term “Kundalini” originates. It basically represents a snake that has been coiling.

Additionally, according to practitioners, Kundalini energy is dormant and unaroused at the base of your spine, just like that coiling serpent.

The energy can go up and through the chakras along your spine when you perform kundalini yoga, which awakens it.

It is an essential concept in the Śhaiva Tantra tradition, where it is thought to be a force or power connected to the divine feminine. Here, Kundalini is linked to the goddesses Bhairavi and Kubjika and Parvati, also known as Adi Parashakti, the supreme entity in the Shaktism religion.

What will you need to start your Kundalini Yoga practice?

First, you need a basic understanding of the concept of- how Kundalini Yoga works.

Thus, here are six main elements of kundalini yoga you need to comprehend and practice in the following chronological order:

1. Chant to begin. An opening chant, also known as tuning in, is used to start each lesson.

2. Warmup or pranayama. You’ll practice pranayama, breathing exercises, and occasionally movements that stretch your spine. Remember that breath control is the main focus of pranayama.

3. Kriya. A kriya is a series of exercises that include breathing exercises, mudras (hand positions), body work for purification, and meditation. Your instructor determines the kriya’s duration and level of difficulty.

4. Relaxation. This enables your body and mind to take in a kriya’s effects.

5. Meditation. To develop awareness, your teacher leads you via meditation.

6. Chant toward the end. Finally, the session ends with closing chants or mantra recitations.

How to start your Kundalini Yoga practice?

It would be best if you took the actions in the sequence listed below to start a fundamental Kundalini meditation practice.

1. Find a comfortable place to practice. You will need a mat or towel to sit on, and a blanket or shawl to cover yourself with during the relaxation at the end of the practice.

2. When to practice? Kundalini Yoga is best practiced in the morning, but you can do it at any time of day. If you are new to the practice, start with just a few minutes and gradually increase the length of time you practice.

3.Sit with your spine straight and your eyes closed. You can sit in a chair with your feet flat on the ground, or in a cross-legged position on the floor.

4. Get into a meditation zone. Begin by taking a few deep breaths, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth.

5. Do some mantra chanting. As you inhale, mentally repeat the mantra “Ong Namo” (pronounced “Om Nah-moh”). This means “I bow to the divine within.”

Exhale and mentally repeat the mantra “Guru Dev Namo” (pronounced “Goo-roo dev Nah-moh”).
This means “I bow to the divine who’s my teacher.”

Kundalini Yoga is very distinct from other yoga styles like Hatha or Vinyasa, which both center on physical poses. Although there are still physical movements involved, they are not the main focus of this yoga style.
